Major Upgrades to Cedar Spring this summer.

Georgian Bay Islands National Park of Canada will be renovating the park’s main campground and day use area, Cedar Spring, on Beausoleil Island.

As a result of these major renovations and the short construction season on an island, Cedar Spring campground and day use area, including the Tobey and cruiser docks, will be closed to the public beginning Tuesday August 3rd for the remainder of the 2010 operational season.

Canada is proud to assume the 2010 G8 Presidency and will host this year’s G8 summit on June 25-26 in Canada’s Muskoka region.

The Group of Eight (G8) brings together the world’s major advanced economies—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The G8 plays a leading role in international affairs. In partnership with the global community, it has helped establish concrete responses and gather significant resources to address critical global challenges in such areas as health, education and peace and security.

Muskoka will be the fifth G8 summit hosted by Canada since the country joined the prestigious international forum in 1976. The Muskoka 2010 G8 Summit will be a key opportunity for Canada to exercise its leadership on the world stage and promote Canadian values such as human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

Man attacked by large bear in Severn

A large black bear attacked and seriously injured a 48-year-old male in Severn Township Tuesday evening, said Const. Peter Leon, central region media relations officer.

“My understand is he has serious injuries to both of his legs and one of his arms,” he said. “Not totally sure on the extent of those injuries. They are deemed as serious, but non-life threatening so that aspect of it is somewhat encouraging.”

The male was attacked near Upper Big Chute Road and Kinnear Sideroad around 6:30 p.m.

The man, who sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries, was airlifted from the scene to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Hospital in Toronto.

The OPP and Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) are in the area setting up traps in search of the bear, the release stated.

Police are requesting residents who live in the area to keep all pets indoors and to exercise extreme caution until this bear is located, or successfully trapped by the MNR.

If anyone spots the bear immediately call 911.

Biosphere reserves are internationally recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve is one of over 500 UNESCO biosphere reserves throughout the world and currently one of only 15 in Canada.

The eastern coast of Georgian Bay is also known as the “30,000 Islands” and is considered the world’s largest freshwater archipelago.
