Just wondering what a good venue to communicate to the residents of Honey Harbour / Port Severn. Do you have a daily newspaper? Radio station?
    Please advise :)

    Thank you!

    • Killion says:

Try Bulletin Publishing. They have a monthly and a seasonal paper covering Honey Harbour, Port Severn & environs & sorry, no local radio or TV stations… You do realize the size, as in geography & topography along with the population of the place?. The very idea of a “daily paper” is actually pretty hysterical.

    • Bev says:

      Or try this website. :)

Anyone aware a shuttle or bus that goes to Honey Harbour? If so I could use details, thanks a bunch.

    • Debbie says:

The Ontario northland goes to the gas station at the top of honey Harbour Rd. They call it the Port Severn stop. They changed the web site and didn’t post that stop but just call them for the times. It runs twice a day.

    Hi Cathy

For people that are not permanent residents can we attend these towne meetings and debates? When are these held and where?

    • Cathy says:

      Hi Jen
You are on the right Web Site to find out the answers to your questions. I wound look at the home page to find the Town Hall info. Where are you located?

      Cathy

    • Killion says:

Yes, as a temporary resident & cottager / rate-payer you are completely entitled to attend Council Meetings, lobby your MPP for the re-institution of the Spring Bear Hunt. I dont think theres much doubt thats theres’ a direct co-relation between its cancellation, combined with cottage sprawl & warmer winters’ with increasingly frequent encounters. Any long time resident or cottager from Honey Harbour to Cognashene/Go Home knows’ this recent development is an anomaly. Unless the OPP are minutes away, your able to call for assistance, their able to actually respond quickly, then ya, anything could happen.
Unpredictable creatures. The MNR as you’ve come to realize are hours if not days away from reacting, possibly tranquilizing and re-locating nuisance Bears from the area if in fact they even have the mandate, resources & personnel to do so. Meanwhile, Id suggest you invest in some cowbells & old fashioned dinner triangles and hang them from your eaves ever ready; along with Bear Spray. Read up on the Bear Aware link provided here on this site.

On Saturday, we encountered 2 bears in a neighbor’s driveway, in the middle of the afternoon, while adults and children were right in the front yard. The neighbor called 911, the officer who responded, stated, “of course we are going to encounter bears, because, after all, we are in their livingroom!” He did not consider it a nuisance bear. He told us to go inside and wait for the bears to go away. A call to the MNR resulted in being told they would investigate on Tuesday, 3 days after the insident! Bear sighting are triple what they have been, very aggrssive bears going indoors in many cases and not being frightened off by loud noises and lots of activities. The two bears in this issue wandered off by came back twice more. Myself and my husband are licenced hunters and although we had never been interested in hunting bears, we strongly believe the cancellation of the spring bear hunt is directly responible for the large over population of bears in our area. I did not get the impression the police are educated in the handling of nuisance bears. “Leave it alone and stay indoors” is not an opption most residents would be pleased with. MNR does not seem concerned with our problem since they will only respond days later. Are they waiting until someone is attacked in their own home or yard?
Although as I stated, I do not want to hunt bears, if they come into my yard while myself, my children or my grandchildren are present, I will protect them from this predator. I know we are not on their menu, but a sudden movement or sound that they may consider danger will cause them to attack. I encourage all residents, non-hunters and hunters, alike, to demand the return of the spring bear hunt, to control the bear population in and around our area. Working together we can discourge the bear encounters, get rid of food garbage, do not ever feed bears and keep BBQ clean of grease. But, with the high numbers of bears in the area, encounters will continue and we should all have the right to protect ourselves, our families and property from these dangerous animals.

    • Jennifer says:

      Hi Cathy
Where is your cottage located? Do you think we can do anything to bring back the spring bear hunt?

      • Cathy says:

        Hi Jen

I am located on Honey Harbour Rd. The only thing we can all do is tell our MP how big of issue it is for us in the area. Ask during debates, bring it up at Town Meeting, community Policeing meeting, etc.
My husband is a member of the Federation of Hunters and keeps up to date on the latest news in regards to hunting laws and changes to hunting regulations. He is also a member of an organization called COHA – who’s members fight to help Bear Hunting Outfitters, who’s livelyhood has been shut down. Our taxes are being spent subsidizing these hunt camp owners, who would rather be making their income with the Spring Bear Hunt. So not only did the Cancellation of the Spring Hunt results in an over population of bears, it’s has also had a major impact on the economic structure of small town business’s. In the end the bear huggers win! Again, until someone is hurt or killed!

        Cathy

  8. Jen says:

With regards to the bear issues in and around Honey Harbour, does anyone think or have an opinion about bringing the spring bear hunt back? Would this be something that would help with controlling the bear population?
