On Saturday, we encountered 2 bears in a neighbor’s driveway, in the middle of the afternoon, while adults and children were right in the front yard. The neighbor called 911, the officer who responded, stated, “of course we are going to encounter bears, because, after all, we are in their livingroom!” He did not consider it a nuisance bear. He told us to go inside and wait for the bears to go away. A call to the MNR resulted in being told they would investigate on Tuesday, 3 days after the insident! Bear sighting are triple what they have been, very aggrssive bears going indoors in many cases and not being frightened off by loud noises and lots of activities. The two bears in this issue wandered off by came back twice more. Myself and my husband are licenced hunters and although we had never been interested in hunting bears, we strongly believe the cancellation of the spring bear hunt is directly responible for the large over population of bears in our area. I did not get the impression the police are educated in the handling of nuisance bears. “Leave it alone and stay indoors” is not an opption most residents would be pleased with. MNR does not seem concerned with our problem since they will only respond days later. Are they waiting until someone is attacked in their own home or yard?
Although as I stated, I do not want to hunt bears, if they come into my yard while myself, my children or my grandchildren are present, I will protect them from this predator. I know we are not on their menu, but a sudden movement or sound that they may consider danger will cause them to attack. I encourage all residents, non-hunters and hunters, alike, to demand the return of the spring bear hunt, to control the bear population in and around our area. Working together we can discourge the bear encounters, get rid of food garbage, do not ever feed bears and keep BBQ clean of grease. But, with the high numbers of bears in the area, encounters will continue and we should all have the right to protect ourselves, our families and property from these dangerous animals.
I am located on Honey Harbour Rd. The only thing we can all do is tell our MP how big of issue it is for us in the area. Ask during debates, bring it up at Town Meeting, community Policeing meeting, etc.
My husband is a member of the Federation of Hunters and keeps up to date on the latest news in regards to hunting laws and changes to hunting regulations. He is also a member of an organization called COHA – who’s members fight to help Bear Hunting Outfitters, who’s livelyhood has been shut down. Our taxes are being spent subsidizing these hunt camp owners, who would rather be making their income with the Spring Bear Hunt. So not only did the Cancellation of the Spring Hunt results in an over population of bears, it’s has also had a major impact on the economic structure of small town business’s. In the end the bear huggers win! Again, until someone is hurt or killed!
With regards to the bear issues in and around Honey Harbour, does anyone think or have an opinion about bringing the spring bear hunt back? Would this be something that would help with controlling the bear population?
Yeah Justin I saw these 2 bears up along the long straight away portion of South Bay road near the transfer station. We had neighbors spot one a couple cottages away from ours on South Bay earlier in the season. They are around that is for sure.
I am Just wondering if anyone could tell me if honeymoon bay island is still off limits because of the bares ,, I am planing to come up camping this weekend and I just wana make sure there is a place to camp….Last time I came up there were signs “don’t enter” cause of the bares….I am hope to go back to the island this year ..
We are on Picnic Island…A bear of the same size entered the add a room in a trailer in the park, rummaged through the fridge and left through a screen, all while the trailer was occupied.
For some reason there is a lot of bears around Honey Harbour, i have seen one on May 24 weekend while conoeing…….Have been camping north of River Valley, and that is 3hours north of Sudbury and there was no bears in sight at all.
we had a bear show up on starrs island on July 9. It was by our deck. I then spotted it again on July 17 swimming from starrs to tomahawk. Is a horn and bear spray enough to protect my family?
Hi Andy
Friends of ours saw a bear the same size swim from the end of Mermaid Island towards Deer Island on July 14.Sounds like he makes he way around following the sent of food. Hope he never returns our way.
Hi Jennifer and Andy,
We also have had numerous bear sightings in Lover’s Bay on Little Beausoleil. The latest was on Saturday night. I had just finished cooking salmon on the Bar-B-Que, and there he was, right out front!!! Did not seem aggressive and slowly wandered off. He has torn down our neighbours birdfeeders and hummingbird feeders. The dogs have treed it a few times. As soon as he left, our oldest daughter walked down the stairs only to encounter a rattle snake!!! On the weekend our neighbour had heard about a cottage being broken into by the bear, we thought on Lt.Dog Channel, but maybe that was you Jennifer!!! What a scary thing, I glad everyone is ok.
On July 12 at our family cottage on Mermaid Island across from the Lakeside Grill a bear came in the cottage through a open window at 2pm after a bag of garbage in a container. Our eleven year old daughter opened the door to the cottage to get a drink and saw it sitting on the kitchen floor. The OPP and Ministry were called after my husband scared it out and he climbed back out the window. He then sat under the cottage for a while when waiting for another OPP to come with a stronger gun but he took off behind the cottage. The OPP waited for over one hour and he did not reappear. They left and went in the cottage to clean up and her reappeared looking in the windows once again we called the OPP and stayed at a far distance while the bear looked around looking for a way of getting in. The OPP and ministry tired again to destroy the bear but the could not find him. He has not been seen by us since then. It was a very scary experience for our family and I hope we do not have to go through again so we as cottager need to do our part to keep them away by taking our garbage to the collection bins nightly, no bird feeders, not feeding them in any way and keeping your windows shut when you can not see them. This bear is a male around 2yrs old and weighs around 90-100lbs. Would like to hear if anyone else has any bear stories. To the cottagers on Mermaid stay alert and be prepared for any encounters. This is our first time in over 30yrs.
hey jennifer, we had a bear at our back door shed on July 3rd in the evening. Although he was not as aggressive as yours sounds like the same size bear. We are off deer island channel. He took a look at me, I made some noise and he retreated and we havent seen him since…knock on wood.
My family encoutered a bear on Roberts’ Island this past week. It went to several cottages along the shore before going away. I’m going up this weekend and hope he is long gone!
I also have a cottage on roberts, right across from picnic. There has been a bear around since early spring. I personally have not seen it, but many neighbours have. I was up last weekend and did find fresh scat right behind my place.
Huronia bait and tackle has minnows. It is about 1 km east of the 400 on highway 12. There is no place right in Honey Harbour that has them. There # is 705-538-2573.
I was just wondering if anyone had a floating dock for sale that we might be able to purchase or come and pick up if unwanted. We are hoping to find something that is 8 foot wide by whatever length so that we may extend our current dock. Please feel free to email me at dvlong@me.com We are located on portage island near Franceville.

Hi Cathy
Where is your cottage located? Do you think we can do anything to bring back the spring bear hunt?

Thanks in advance.
